Jane didn’t wake the next morning until after ten. She quickly showered and dressed, knowing the day was going to be a busy one. She had only forty-eight hours before the intervention. She hadn’t slept well. Instead, she’d spent the night going over everything she’d learned. Cordelia had been right to think something was amiss. Jane’s conversation with Curt last night had confirmed it. What she must do now was simply follow the threads to see where they led.

As she moved silently down the upstairs hall, she noticed that most of the doors were still closed. Only Orson’s was open and empty. She didn’t knock on Cordelia’s door, she merely entered, lifting the shade slightly to allow some light into the room before sitting down on the edge of the bed.

“You don’t need to get up,” she said softly.

The covers rustled. Cordelia was completely buried in them.

“Just tell me where your car keys are.”

“Why?” came the muffled response.

“I want to drive over to the funeral home. Check it out.”

“Without me?”

“I didn’t think you’d want to get up. I know you had a late night at The Mall.”

An eye appeared. “Cute.”

“So where are they?”

“When are you leaving?”

“Fifteen minutes, maybe. I thought I’d run downstairs and grab a bite to eat first.”

“Make it twenty and I’ll meet you out in the parking lot.”

“Don’t you want any breakfast?”

“I went a little berserk last night at the frozen yoghurt stand.”

“I got it.” She stood. “See you in twenty minutes.”
